Are You Right There Michael, Are You Right?
5km Charity Walk on the Castlebar Greenway & Lough Lannagh
A very unique fundraiser in aid of Mayo/Roscommon Hospice and Western Care will take place in Castlebar on Saturday, July 18th. Well-known local publican and “Aul Stock”, Mick Byrne, will lead a 5km fun charity walk on the Castlebar Greenway and Lough Lannagh … but there is a catch, you can only partake if your name is Michael, Michelle, Micheala, Mickey, Mike, Miquel etc!! Even if your second name or Confirmation name is one of these, you’re eligible. However, for a small donation to the benefiting charities Mayo Roscommon Hospice and Western Care Association, you can become a Michael/Michelle for the day!
This super novel idea has certainly caught the attention of people already. Mick Byrne has issued a very humorous invitation to Michaels and Michelles (and all variations) from all over Ireland and further afield to join him in Castlebar on the eve of the Connaught Final, in the spirit of the famous Percy French song ‘Are You Right There Michael?’ to walk in support of the two very worthy charities.
Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation exists to provide palliative care services to people with life limiting illnesses and their families in Counties Mayo Roscommon. The Foundation affirms life, respecting the uniqueness of each individual, by caring and supporting to meet the physical and emotional needs of patients and their families living with life threatening illnesses. The Service enables patients to live out the remainder of their lives in comfort and dignity. The Palliative Care Service is provided free of charge to all. Western Care Association provides a wide range of services and supports to more than 1,100 children and adults with intellectual and associated disabilities and/or autism and their families in a community setting throughout County Mayo.
The walk will commence in ‘Hoban’s’ Car Park at 5pm and, led by the Castlebar Concert Band to the strains of Are You Right There Michael Are You Right, the Michaels will walk through Main Street and Market Square where they will enter the new Greenway and proceed to Lough Lannagh and then return to the finish.
After the walk music will commence in Hoban’s car park with music legends, “Micks’ Emotions”, who will finish their world tour with their biggest gig to date at Are You Right There Michael, Are You Right? Lead singer, Mick Mulhearne, told organisers that the band were “over the moon” when asked to play at this prestigious event. “We have travelled all over the world playing alongside Michael Buble, Michael Jackson, Michael Bolton and Mick Flavin but to stand shoulder to shoulder with Mick Byrne and his pack of Micks is the greatest moment of our career”. The band is made up of Michael Buckton, Mick Mulhearne, Mike Staunton, Michael Tom Lyons, Mick Baynes and special guest on the night, Michael Sheridan. Mick Baynes, who played in a duo with Michael Buckton called “A Pair Of Micks”, said “it’s great to be back in our home town surrounded by Micks and looking forward to the walk too”. Mike Staunton has been training for this walk every day since it was announced and told us that “it’s great to see a good MIX of people supporting the event and looking forward to the gig and throwing all our music into the MIX on the night”. When asked was he looking forward to the big hometown gig, Michael Buckton replied, “Yes!”.
